Origen announces partnership with Energy and Environmental Research Center to achieve 1,000 tonnes per annum scale direct-air-capture in 2025

Bristol, U.K. and Grand Forks, North Dak. — October 24, 2024 – Origen Power Limited (“Origen”) announced today its partnership with the Energy and Environmental Research Center (“EERC”) in North Dakota to advance commercial development of its world leading carbon dioxide removal technology.

At EERC’s advanced carbon management facilities, Origen will demonstrate its integrated limestone-based direct air capture (“DAC") solution at 1,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) scale, expected to be online in 2025.  This will put Origen at the forefront of the world’s direct air capture technologies and is something only a handful of companies have achieved to date.

Origen’s differentiated approach to DAC uses the natural chemistry of highly abundant limestone to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Origen separates the carbon from the limestone rock, safely storing it underground, to create the mineral lime. Lime is then effective at pulling carbon from the atmosphere through a naturally occurring and passive process.

“At Origen we are confident we have technology that puts us at the forefront of direct air capture technologies globally. Our partnership with EERC allows us to reach a meaningful milestone in technology development on an accelerated time frame as we start turning our attention to commercial scale direct air capture facilities. We remain committed to reducing the amount of carbon already in the atmosphere through limestone-based direct air capture,” stated Ben Riddle-Turner, Origen’s CEO.

The EERC in North Dakota is a strong technical fit with unique existing infrastructure and complementary capabilities that provide Origen with the ability to fast-track its technology for deployment at scale.  The Center is a globally recognised commercialization partner for the carbon management industry and has an established track record of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and industry partnerships. Along with Origen’s recently announced participation in Pelican Gulf Coast Removal DAC project, this partnership expands Origen’s operations and focus in the United States.

“The EERC is a leader in developing new technologies and practical solutions to critical energy challenges. We’re excited to share that expertise with Origen to further advance their carbon dioxide removal technology,” stated Charles Gorecki, Energy & Environmental Research Center CEO.

Alongside its expansion into the United States, Origen will continue to invest in the UK through a recently opened Technology Centre in Bristol.  The company also continues to grow and scale its commercial projects worldwide.

About Origen
Origen is a UK and US-based climate technology company founded by preeminent thinkers in carbon removal and industrial technology, who believe in the power of limestone to permanently sequester CO2 and reverse the impacts of climate change. Origen's direct-air-capture (DAC) technology uses the natural chemistry of abundantly available limestone rock to durably remove CO2 from the air with its green lime kiln and low-intensity air contactor.  The company aims to scale to millions then billions of tonnes of carbon removal to achieve its mission, “The Atmosphere, Restored.”

About EERC
The EERC is a global leader in researching and developing technologies that make energy production more efficient and environmentally friendly. The organization works with clients to provide practical solutions to real-world challenges. Utilizing decades of energy research, the EERC is a driving force for innovation and new opportunities in the energy industry.
